This year also, from every corner of Seklerland a significant number of boys and girls, dressed up in traditional costume were celebrating on 5th of July, reviving the tradition launched 83 years ago by Mr. Pál Péter Domokos. On the day of the One Thousand Sekler Girl’s Day more than one thousand girls and boys were gathering in Miercurea Ciuc, in order to go together to the ‘saddler’ of Șumuleu Ciuc (Csíksomlyó), after the ceremonial opening.
On the official ceremony, organized on the Freedom square, speeches were held by Mr. Attila Markó, parliamentary representative and Mr. Csaba Borboly, president of Harghita County Council. Mr. László Fábián, the Mayor of Sânsimion (Csíkszentsimon), the host settlement of this year’s event.
Mr. Attila Markó welcomed first those wearing traditional costumes and interested participants. As he claimed, he is glad to lead the Sekler girls and boys from Covasna County, who are in total number of 350, this year. In his speech he said that ‘this event always remembers me about the following line from Mr. Sándor Kányádi’s poem entitled as Black-red: ’One pair of girls, two pair of girls are dancing black-red black’. I truly wish that this dance to be danced by Sekler girls for a long time yet to come.’
Mr. Csaba Borboly, county council president expressed his gratitude toward the main organizes of the event, for the Mayor’s Office of Miercurea Ciuc, as well as for every Sekler girl and boy, who are proving in traditional costumes that Seklerland exists. He added that we should work constantly on preserving the Sekler habits and traditions, which determine and characterize us: in the communities, villages and cities the Sekler youth have to have an opportunity, for the reason why we have to work through strengthening each other and in good health. The county council president spoke beside the fact that ’the one and one thousand women and men do not like if their leaders are debating with each other on great celebrations, which all should be about collaboration and the endevour to find common goals, and common solutions. Let’s talk about the Sekler vitality, encouragement, and not about swearing at each other.’ He also added that we have to work never against somebody or something but always for somebody and something.
Afterwards, on the opening ceremony the girls and boys dressed up in traditional costume were warming up for the dance, which was organized in Șumuleu Ciuc. Whereas, in order to pay homage to the memory of Mr. Pál Péter Domokos, flowers were put at his statue. On the ’saddler’ Mr. Csaba Böjte, Franciscan monk held the holy mass starting from 11.00 o’clock. Then from 15.00 o’clock The Harghita National Sekler Folkensemble followed, performing their dance-play entitled as ‘The Hammer of Sóvidék’. Finally, all day long craft and traditional costume fair and related activities were organized, as well as participants could dance and play.
